The Centre for Gender and Social Policy Studies (CGSPS), Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria is pleased to announce its upcoming Biennial Conference themed Gender and the Actualization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): The African Experience .

Global crises associated with poverty, inequality and misuse of the environment have presented the need to explore alternative approaches to gender equality and women empowerment in Africa. In this context, policy makers, development practitioners and scholars are directing their attention towards engaging gender as an imperative framework in the bid to achieving inclusive and sustainable development across the length and breadth of the Continent. While there has been an expanding body of research and knowledge on inclusive and sustainable development, there has been limited effort to systematically analyse the centrality of gender towards enabling participatory development within the African context.

The 2030 Agenda and its 17 SDGs devised by the United Nations in 2015 provides a context for tracking progress vis-à- vis specific development goals. This is in conjunction with more integrated patterns of development that avoid the trade-off, and contradictions related to the development strategies usually pursued in the past. Moreover, the emphasis within the 2030 Agenda on national goals and targets open the question to the SDGs for the implementation at the local level, grounded in local realities.

The Centre is therefore calling for submission of Papers that assess the role of gender in the attainment of set targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with emphasis on Africa.
