World Bank Trains OAU Staff, Pg Students on Cyber Security, Privacy

Print Email

The World Bank, donor of the African Centre of Excellence (ACE) in Software Engineering and the Obafemi Awolowo University ICT-Driven Knowledge Park (OAK-Park), has financed a five-day training on cyber security for staff of the University with a view to adequately equipping them for the task of securing themselves and the University against the danger and other threats prevalent in the cyber space.

The participants, who were drawn from both the faculty and non-faculty staff of the university and included Postgraduate students, were taken through the rudiments and sophistication of threat-recognition, containment, neutralization and remedial-action, backed-up with complete hands-on practical sessions to test internalization and assimilation of the knowledge being imparted.

The Centres’ Communication Officer, Dr. Temitope Aladesanmi, a cyber security expert, who coordinated the training noted while addressing the participants at the commencement of the workshop on behalf of the Co-Centre Leader, Professor Adesola Aderounmu, that the training was another of the many that the World Bank is bankrolling for the benefit of the staff of the University.

He admonished the participants to prepare to deploy whatever knowledge they would take away from the training, to protect themselves and the corporate existence of the University, as the computer can become a “weapon of mass destruction” in the hands of a criminally-minded individual in any part of the world.

According to him, the whole essence of the training, which had specialists and experts from the field and academia as tutors, was to make gradual but appreciable effort to put the “really bad guys” out of their “hack-tivities”. Other facilitators include Dr. Kayode Ayodele of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, OAU and Mr. Ganiyu Azeez, a European-Council Certified Security Specialist
