An Oxford, United Kingdom (UK) based University don, Professor Wale Adebanwi, has challenged Nigerian Universities’ scholars and researchers not to be daunted by the myriads of problems they encounter in their efforts at churning out quality publications and research findings, even as he reiterated that their resilience in scholarly works will keep advancing the frontiers of knowledge and posterity will not be forget such contributions in a hurry.

Professor Adebanwi stated this while delivering a keynote address title “The Social life of a Scholarly Publication:  From Conception to Execution”, at the opening ceremony of the Ife Summer Institute 2018, organized by the Ife Summer Institute of Advanced Studies for the Foundation run by Professor Jacob Oluponna and his wife, Mary.

The Oxford University Political Science Professor asserted that it is high time academics in Nigeria and Africa in general, stopped complaining about lack of infrastructure and conducive environment for scholarly works and researches, adding that they should reach deep within and stimulate the necessary impetus that will encourage and facilitate their works.

He maintained, while appealing to researchers to learn to wait patiently for the full gestation of their researches, that rejection is a part of learning the rope and thus added that it is important individual researcher devise a mechanism for coping with rejection of articles, no matter how painful it might be.  In his words, “be inspired beyond the apparent limitations to scholarly publication.  Work harder and be imaginative to produce a work that can scale the hurdle of rejection and be published internationally”.

Earlier at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, welcomed eminent dignitaries to the University for the official flag-off of the 2nd Ife Summer Institute, an academy he noted the University is very proud to host.

He thanked the Harvard University-based Professor Kehinde Oluponna and his wife for their passion for the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, adding that the Oluponnas, being world citizens, could have taken the institute elsewhere, but instead they chose Ife.  Ogunbodede said the University administration is indeed grateful for this.

Also speaking, the convener, erudite Professor Jacob Oluponna gave an insight into the conception of the academy, disclosing that his passion at raising a new generation of young scholars worldwide, particularly in Nigeria and Africa, who can compete favourably in their chosen areas of scholarship, birthed the Institute of Advanced Studies.

He continued that the positive reports of the pioneer fellows of the institute were the impetus for the prompt organization of this second edition, adding that the choice of OAU as the host was not far-fetched given the affinity he and his family has with the University.

The opening ceremony equally saw presentation of goodwill messages by General Abdulaman Danbazau (rtd.), the Honourable Minister of Interior, Federal Republic of Nigeria; Alayeluwa, His Royal Majesty, Oba Adedokun Abolarin, Aroyinkaye I, Orangun of Oke-Ila; the President, Nigerian Academy of Letters, Professor Olu Obafemi; the Chairman, Committee of Deans and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Niyi Aluko; and the Provost, Postgraduate College, Professor Gbenga Alebiowu, among other dignitaries.
