African Development Bank Group (AfDB) - Established in 1964, the African Development Bank is the premier pan-African development institution, promoting economic growth and social progress across the continent. Objectives
The Young Professionals Program (YPP) targets high potential, best-in-class young professionals with a strong passion for Africa’s development. This program is not an internship arrangement; rather it offers exceptional career opportunities to talented young professionals with leadership potential, an established record of outstanding academic and professional achievement to make a difference to the development of the African continent. The YPP includes a rigorous program of activities including a learning Academy that prepares participants to be technical and professional leaders with notable impact:

    • The Program is for a period of three years; the first two years will be spent on mandatory rotational placements across the Bank’s various functions. The third-year rotation year will be spent in the Home Complex where the YP will graduate into a staff position. Only YPs who have completed the YP Academy and have exhibited high performance and high potential will be integrated into the Bank’s workforce.
    • The Professional and Personal Development Program is structured under the Young Professionals Learning Academy with specific learning interventions delivered in phases of 6 months each. These learning interventions serve to deepen technical knowledge and build leadership skills required for effective delivery of task functions and future roles in the Bank. The Learning academy also includes on- the job training that requires immersion into various functional areas of the Bank for hands-on experience in projects and various work assignments.
    • On-boarding and orientation programs ensure faster integration into the Bank’s culture and offers a robust support mechanism from mentors, coaches and buddy groups.
    • Individual performance and potential will be reviewed periodically, and the necessary personal development plans customized to individual needs.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Young Professional Program (YPP) Strategic Focus Areas For 2019 Intake:

The Bank seeks to recruit Young Professionals in specific disciplines and specialist professional areas that are aligned to the Ten-Year Strategy (TYS); the five priority areas of the Bank (High 5s) and People strategy. The Hi-5s are captured below:

    • Light Up and Power Africa:
      • Power Systems Development (grid base power system, power utilities), Climate Change and Green Growth (climate finance, climate adaptation), Energy Statistics, Policy and Regulation (energy statistics), Renewable Energy (off grid energy access), Energy Partnerships (energy partnerships and stake-holders engagement, energy markets).
    • Feed Africa:
      • Agriculture & Agro-industry (agribusiness development, agriculture research, production and sustainability), Agricultural finance & Rural development (agricultural and rural finance, rural infrastructure development).
    • Integrate Africa:
      • Development Research (macroeconomic policy, debt sustainability and forecasting, micro economic, institutional and development impact), Governance and public financial management (program development, policy management), Statistics (economic and social statistics, statistical capacity building).
    • Industrialize Africa:
      • Private Sector Development (strategy and new product, portfolio asset management, special operations), Financial sector development (financial institutions, financial inclusion), Infrastructure, cities & urban development (transport and logistics, ICT), Industrial and trade development.

 

    • Improve the lives of the people of Africa:
      • Water, Human and Social development (education, human capital and employment, sanitation and public health.
      • The Young Professionals Program (YPP) targets High Potential, best-in-class young professionals with a strong passion for Africa’s development. The Program offers exceptional career opportunities to talented young professionals with leadership potential, an established record of outstanding academic and professional achievement to make a difference to the development of the African continent. It is a three-year leadership opportunity for the development of Bank’s future workforce and leaders. The Bank aims attract highly qualified and motivated professionals from our member countries for a productive and rewarding career path in development. Through the YPP, the Bank ensures continuity and excellence in both the management of its work programs and the provision of policy advice to its RMCs.

Selection Criteria
The Young Professional Program targets motivated and high-potential individuals from our member countries. Applicants must meet the following conditions:

    • Be a citizen of a member country of the Bank.
    • Be 32 years of age or younger by 1st May 2020.
    • Possess a Master’s degree or equivalent in any discipline that is relevant to the business of the Bank, with outstanding academic credentials.
    • Have at least 3 years post graduate work experience in the areas related to the high priority areas (Hi-5s) as mentioned above.
    • Interested candidates with coding, e-development, animation and platforms designs and maintenance are required this year.
    • Demonstrable hands-on experience on the African continent and/or in other continent’s developing countries is a necessary requirement.
    • Have a passion for Africa’s development
    • Able to leverage knowledge, share and coach others. Work effectively in teams with displayed high adaptability to a diverse environment.
    • Strong analytical skills, an entrepreneurial drive, results-orientation and problem-solving capability.
    • High business acumen and innovative mindset.
    • Be proficient in the Bank’s working languages, either English and/or French.
    • Have skills that enable you work in a digital environment and embrace technology as it evolves.
    • Be willing to live in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire the Bank’s Headquarters, and any other country in Africa where the Bank may require your services.
    • Ability to travel continentally (20% of your time).

400 level OAU Student of the Department of Agricultural Economics wins Sahel Scholar program

Ibukun Diadem ADEYEMI is a 400 level student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state.

She has represented her Department and Faculty at various competitions outside the university which include: the 4th Edition of Professor Peter Adebola Okuneye Intervarsity Debate, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta; the 2nd Edition of the Annual Inter-Agricultural University Competition and Exhibition, Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara state; Professor Falusi Varsity Paper Presentation, University of Ibadan.

She has travelled within and outside the borders of the country for Agricultural conferences for orientation on agribusiness and national development. She is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Nigeria Association of Agricultural Economics Students (NAAES) magazine. She is also into Data Analysis.

She recently won Sahel Scholar program where she will be representing the University at Sahel Consulting Firm for four weeks.

OAU Takes Pride in Olutoye's Medical Feat

The Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, has described an alumnus of the University, Professor Oluyinka Olutoye, as a fantastic advertisement of the medical college of the University.

Reacting to the news of the appointment of Professor Oluyinka Olutoye as Surgeon-in-Chief of Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Ohio, United States, the Vice-Chancellor said the University is proud to associate with the medical feat.

The Vice-Chancellor congratulated Professor Olutoye saying the University is elated and honored by the news of a worthy alumnus being given such a responsibility in the Diaspora. The Managing Director and Chief Medical Officer at the hospital, Richard Brilli, had remarked that, “management were tremendously delighted to have Dr. Olutoye’s experience on their team to further elevate the visibility and reputation of one of the best overall children’s surgical programs in the country that through its clinical care and research, is forging the future of children’s surgery.

“Having a world-renowned fetal and paediatric surgeon join our leadership team will further advance Nationwide Children’s commitment to establishing a preeminent fetal surgery program.” The appointment of Professor Olutoye, who had previously served as Co-Director of the Fetal Center and the immediate-past President of the Medical Staff at Texas Children’s Hospital, took effect from August 1, 2019.

Alumni Group Donates Drugs to Health Centre

A group of alumni of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, known as the Uniq Group, a.k.a Brothers for Life, has made a donation of drugs worth over a million naira (N1m) to the University Health Centre.

Speaking at the event to receive the donation, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, expressed the appreciation of the University administration to the group members for their selflessness, stressing that the University needs more groups or individual alumnus to give back to their alma-mater.

Ogunbodede, who continued that many projects had been executed in the University by the alumni, appealed that the University still needs the alumni to do more as most buildings in the University are almost sixty (60) years old thus demanding renovation.

He further seized the opportunity of the event to call on other alumni and stakeholders to come to the aid of the indigent students in the University by putting up a scholarship scheme for them. The leader of the group, Mr. Bola Alaga appreciated the University administration for the good works they have been doing to actualize the dream of the founding fathers of the institution, noting that as alumni group, they felt they should contribute their quota to the development of their alma-mater that made them to be donating drugs to the University’s Health Centre since 2017. He promised that apart from donating drugs they will engage in other projects soon.

SPECIAL RELEASE: “Computer Related Fraud Alert”

This is to bring to the notice of all Students, an increase in the activities of On-Line and computer related fraudsters. These activities go by several tags including: “Computer Fraud”, “Business Fraud”, “Wire Fraud” or “Yahoo Yahoo”.

The Division of Student Affairs wishes to advise all OAU students to take special care while carrying out their online financial transactions and to shun all business activities that seems dubious or which you might not be comfortable discussing with family, friends and associates.

In particular, note the following:

1. Do not disclose your banking details to any one you do not know or trust.
2. Do not receive or send money on behalf of persons you are not familiar with.
3. Do not agree to help persons with suspicious sources of wealth “keep” money for short or long periods of time.
4. When you offer to keep stolen money on behalf of fraudsters you stand the risk of being convicted of being an accessory to a crime.
5. If you detect any strange transaction on your Bank Account, visit the nearest branch of your bank immediately and lodge a complaint.
6. Remember ignorance is not an excuse in a court of law.

We strongly advise our Students to desist from any act that will affect their future negatively.
