The Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy inauguration & Distribution Report

Inauguration of the OAU Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy

The inauguration of Anti-Sexual Harassment (ASH) policy document of Obafemi Awolowo University took place on the 25th of August, 2021. Many dignitaries graced the occasion. The special guests of honour for the day were their Excellencies, the First Lady of the State of Osun, Alhaja Kafayat Oyetola & the First Lady of Ekiti State, Erelu Bisi Fayemi. The special guests of honour were accompanied by wives of commissioners and other dignitaries.

The Vice Chancellor joined on Zoom to present his welcome address at the occasion. The two Deputy Vice Chancellors – Prof. Olubola Babalola (DVC academic) & Prof. O.M.A Daramola (DVC Administration) were in attendance. Deans of faculties, directors/heads of units/departments were also in attendance. Also in attendance were academic & non-academic members of staff of the University, different union leaders on campus, students, health centre staff and other well-wishers.

Dr. Mapayi set the ball rolling at the occasion by giving the audience reason for the gathering. The main speech was delivered by Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade, who emphasized the need for the creation of an enabling working and learning environment devoid of any form of sexual harassment for both staff & students.

There were also presentations by Campus Pal by Gender Mobile on how to report sexual harassment cases. Hotline presentation was also done by Campus Health & Rights Initiative (CHRI). The departments of Drama & Music brightened the occasion with drama & music presentations. Her Excellency, the First Lady of the State of Osun, Alhaja Kafayat Oyetola gave goodwill message. Some others that gave goodwill messages were Dr. Monica Orisadare, the immediate past Acting Director, Centre for Gender, union leaders and female students’ representative among others.

The presentation of the policy was done by her Excellency, the First Lady of Ekiti State, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, who also emphasized the ills of sexual harassment & other related anti-social behaviour. Thereafter, pictures were taken with the special guests of honour and the meeting came to a close at about 3pm.

Distribution of the Policy Documents

Since the inauguration of the ASH policy, copies of the policy documents have been distributed across the University. Copies have been taken to all Faculty boards at their meetings between the 6th& 9th September, to be distributed to academic and non-academic staff members across the departments in each faculty. Other units/directorates and centres that have been served with copies of the policy document include – the University Health Centre, the Post-graduate college, the security unit, the Library, Bursary, Budgeting, Pension Desk office, ATSE, ACSE, the registry, the directorate of Academic Affairs (DAA), Corporate services, STDU, IFEDS, CTLW, IPTTO, Central Office of Research (COR), offices, OAU International & Staff Schools, the religious centres on campus among others. Other sections of the University community yet to be served with the copies of the policy document include – the Centre for Distance learning (CDL), the University & private halls of residence, the University Press, Maintenance unit, OAU water, the cleaning services, Okada riders, New Buka & New Market.

Omowumi Aishat ADESINA: OAU Management Commiserates with family, friends.

The University Management commiserates with the family, friends and colleagues of Ms. Omowumi Aishat ADESINA, a 24-year old, female, Part 4 student of the Department of Foreign Languages, on the sad occurrence of Thursday, 30th September, 2021. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved at this very trying moment.

Indeed, on Tuesday, 28th September, 2021 the deceased ADESINA Omowumi Aishat had reported to the University Health Centre with signs and symptoms of a severe infection. She was promptly treated, given some drugs and asked to report back as an out-patient. She reported back to the Health Centre in the morning of Thursday, 30th September, 2021. Upon examination, she was referred to the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital, Ile-Ife, for further management where she regrettably died on Thursday 30th September, 2021.

 The University Management understands the grief resulting from this untimely death within the community and sympathises with the parents, friends, colleagues and the entire students of the University on this sad loss, and prays for the repose of her soul.
