A final year student of the department of English, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Adejumo Kabir is transforming the “phase” of journalism on Nigeria campuses.
While OAU did not have a Mass Communication department, Kabir since his 100 level days had been actively involved in responsible journalism which has brought him dozens of laurels from local and international organisations including a finalist spot at the 2018 Student Category of African Check Awards in South Africa.
In 2018, he was declared the winner of Alfred Opubor's Award for Most Prolific Student Writer, Best Investigative Journalist and Overall Best Student Journalist in Nigeria. The award organised by Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism also had OAU winning the Most Active Campus for Journalism Practice in Nigeria.
Kabir has visited different universities and polytechnics to train over 500 campus journalists on the best practices of journalism and in early 2019, he launched Campus Press Hub; an initiative for training fellow journalism students the basic skills they will need when they graduate and start practicing professionally.
The youngster has received training, certificates, and even grants from some of Nigeria’s most reputable media organizations for upholding the ethics of journalism. In January, he registered his media hub with Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission and received a certificate of registration.
While being the first student in Africa to launch a media hub on campus hasn’t come easy for him, Kabir strived to write and publish his first book titled: "Campus Journalism Beginners' Handbook
In the foreword of the book, a veteran journalist and publisher of Premium Times, Dapo Olorunyomi, noted that the author has done the broad practice of journalism in Nigeria a great service by putting together and publishing what, to his mind, is the first practice guide on the hitherto “hidden” genre of campus journalism.
“The scope and range are decidedly modest, targeting it to the beginner, and for that reason, the major preoccupation is about bolts joints – the elements, the ethical demands, the necessity, and the challenges. I find the work pleasant and unpretentious, qualities that, invariably will help to make this interesting work a hugely famous keepsake.”
