Special Release From The Office The Registrar, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile- Ife, Osun, Nigeria.

OAU MANAGEMENT THANKS STAFF AND STUDENTS

The University Management is not unaware of the hardship occasioned by the unwarranted invasion of the University Campus by Ile-Ife indigenes. The situation is constantly being monitored and everything possible will continue to be done to bring things under control.

Management empathizes with staff and students who have been injured or traumatized in this unfortunate state of affairs. Appropriate and relevant authorities, within and outside the University have been duly informed of the development.

However, the Management has noted the unfortunate and inimical roles of some individuals and wishes to remind everyone of the need to desist from acts that are capable of disrupting the peace of the University.

We sincerely appreciate the patience and understanding of staff and students, as well as the maturity so far exhibited in the face of this unwarranted assault on the University community.

Once again, the University Management appeals to all staff and students to remain calm, ignore any provocation, and go about their legitimate duties.

M. I. Omosule (Mrs.)

Special Release to all Students on Maintenance of Discipline in the Halls of Residence in OAU

It has come to the knowledge of the Division of Student Affairs of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) that some students of this University have been trying to misinform the generality of students of the University by inciting the students that “OAU Awo Hall Porters beat a student with pipes to point of injury”.  We wish to inform all students that the Division of Student Affairs of the University has investigated the matter and discovered that the information is untrue.

It is important for the Division of Student Affairs to inform all students that our investigation revealed that the student (Sumbade Saudiq) who wanted to forcefully gain entrance into Awolowo Hall of Residence without presenting his identity card when the Porter requested him to do so, abused, insulted and assaulted the Porter on duty.  The student who demonstrated an unruly behavior was subsequently taken to the Security QRS Unit of the University for interrogation.  Students are to note that recently, some people, who disguised as students have succeeded in stealing laptops and cell phones belonging to students in many Halls of Residence in the University.  Consequently, Hall Porters have been mandated to be much more vigilant in the discharge of their official responsibilities.

The Division of Student Affairs wishes to make it abundantly clear that the rules and regulations guiding the conduct of students in the Halls of Residence are sacrosanct.  All students are advised to comply with the rules and regulations because it is in their best interest to do so.  Students are also advised to note that the Porters in the various Halls of Residence are not only workers of the University who are charged with the responsibilities of ensuring their welfare, among which are ensuring security of lives and properties but also standing in loco-parentis to students.

In view of the above, all students are enjoined to disregard the misinformation and continue with their normal academic activities.

The Division of Student Affairs wishes all students the best of luck in their just concluded 2019/2020 Harmattan Semester examinations.

Special Release to all Students on Resuscitation of the Students' Union in Obafemi Awolowo University

It has come to the knowledge of the University Management that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone D (South West) is planning to stage a protest in respect of “Resuscitation of Students’ Union in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

The University Management wishes to inform all students that prior to the commencement of COVID-19 Lockdown in March, 2020, Obafemi Awolowo University had taken steps to ensure that the Obafemi Awolowo University Students’ Union was resuscitated on two different occasions but the processes were truncated due to the activities of some group of students on our campus.

Meanwhile, Protest or No Protest, the University Management has already determined to reinstate the Suspended Students Union before the end of this current 2019/2020 Academic Session.

In recognition of the right of freedom of association and assembly as well as the right to ensure that students play their roles actively in decision-making processes as one of the major stakeholders in the University, the Management, through the Dean of Student Affairs, took another step in January this year 2021 to present another proposal to the University Senate with a view to ensuring that the Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University was resuscitated.

Accordingly, the University Senate considered the proposal at its virtual meeting in January, 2021 and in its wisdom advised that resuscitation of the Students’ Union, being an exclusive preserve of students, should not be executed virtually while the students were not on ground in the University.

The University Management hereby wishes to inform all students (and other stakeholders) that as soon as all students return to campus fully during the Rain Semester of the current 2019/2020 academic session, machinery will be put in place to set the ball rolling concerning the resuscitation of the Students’ Union in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

We want to sincerely appreciate all our students and other stakeholders for displaying high level of maturity thus far.

In the interim, we advised our students to continue to be law abiding and go about their normal academic activities as arranged by the University Management.
