Call for Applications - Ife-Edinburgh Catalyst Workshop

Ife-Edinburgh Catalyst Workshop

Call for Applications

Theme: (Re)imagining ‘our’ ways of knowing: Decolonization and the Human Sciences

 June 8-10, 2021

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife

Concept

This workshop encourages invited participants to reimagine the social science and humanities curricular in three fundamental ways. First is to question the assumptions upon which knowledge has been created, reproduced and legitimized in the various disciplines, and to ask how (and why) this process may have excluded ‘the local’. This question about legitimation inevitably involves critiquing the role of power in knowledge production and engaging with the emerging subaltern practices of resistance in the global academy. Second, we intend to explore the various points of convergence between and among the disciplines in the social sciences and humanities and ask how the imagined intellectual borders might be converted into bridges through which ideas and people can flow. In this, we aim to deploy interdisciplinarity as a tool of resistance that helps to challenge dominant framings of knowledge which tend to exclude non-western ways of knowing. Finally, we intend to take a practical look at specific samples of courses/modules and attempt to redesign them in a way that speaks to local social realities, draws on a genuinely global epistemic tradition and decentres histories of the powerful.

Code of Conduct Bureau Holds Public Enlightenment Workshop for OAU Staff

In order not to run foul of the laws setting up the Code of Conduct Bureau, the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has organised a two-day workshop on Public Enlightenment on Assets Declaration and Code of Conduct for Public Officers.

In their separate speeches at the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Chris Ajila, who coordinated the workshop, remarked that participants were drawn across the Faculties, Departments and units of the University in two tranches over the two days so as not to affect the smooth running of the university’s operations.

They implored participants to cooperate and listen well to the resource persons from the Code of Conduct Bureau, reminding the participants also that are at liberty to ask questions at the end of the programme.

The Director, Code of Conduct Bureau, Prince Olufadejin Adeniyi explained that the Code of Conduct for Public Officers in Nigeria became necessary particularly when viewed against the backdrop of large scale fraud and corruption which is prevalent in the Public Service and the damage caused by this evil to the nation’s external and corporate image.

He stated that the workshop is crucial as it is sensitize public officers to become accountable and to adopt transparent and best practices in their work.  He further noted that the Part 1 of the fifth (5th) schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, lists the Code of Conduct for Public Officers, warning that there is great danger in filling the assets declaration form for public officers wrongly.
