The Department of Computer Science (now Department of Computer Science and Engineering) was established in 1970 to meet the nation’s needs for skilled manpower in this rapidly expanding field.

After a study of the requirements of industry, commerce, government and research organizations, two undergraduate sprogrammes were established and the first students graduated from these programmes in June 1976. A postgraduate diploma course in Computer Science was introduced in 1974 with the first graduates in 1976. A third undergraduate programme in Computer Engineering was introduced in 1982 which changed the Department to Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

In the beginning, lecturers were drawn from Mathematics and Electrical and Electronics Engineering Departments both in teaching of the courses and serving as external examiners to moderate the examinations. The Department has since trained her own indigenous staff members. Some were trained abroad while others were trained locally.

These form the great majority of lecturers within the Department today. The continuing goal of the Department has been to ensure the relevance of teaching and research to real and immediate needs of the nation. For this reason, the Department maintains close contacts with private sector and governments.

Practitioners from such organizations have played active roles in the development of curricula over the years. They have also provided valuable exposure to our students through seminars and guest teaching. Three undergraduate programmes are available in the Department with each leading to the degree of single or combined honour in Bachelor of Science (B.Sc).
They are:

(a) Honours degree in Computer Engineering
(b) Honours degree in Computer Science with Mathematics
(c) Combined Honours degree in Computer Science with Economics.

Since 2015, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering has been running (15) programmes at Masters and PhD as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science. The postgraduate programmes are:

(a) MSc., MPhil., & PhD in Computer Engineering
(b) MSc., MPhil., & PhD in Computer Science
(c) MSc., MPhil., & PhD in Software Engineering MSc.,
(d) MPhil., & PhD in Information Systems and
(e) MSc., MPhil., & PhD in Intelligent Systems Engineering

Graduates of these programmes are highly regarded and sought after in the academia and industries. They occupy strategic places in the national economy and form the bedrock of operations in Nigeria’s Information and Communication Technologies industry. Over the years, there has been a remarkable thrust in the areas of research within the Department. The areas of research include Information Systems, Software Engineering, Software Development Methodologies, Health Informatics, Numerical Computation, Operations Research, Simulation and Modelling Techniques, Distributed Operating Systems, Computing and Intelligent Systems Engineering, Microprocessor 2 Technology and Digital Systems, Data Communication Networks, Data Warehousing, Mobile Computing, Cybersecurity, Embedded Systems, and Computer Architecture. Consequent upon recent development in the Department and the creation of computing as a discipline, the Department initiated an unbundling process which has birthed five new departments whose approval ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;. They are:
