From Awareness to Action: Combating Sexual Violence in our Communities

In collaboration with the Clinic For Human Rights Obafemi Awolowo University, BAOBAB For Women’s Human Rights organized a sexual violence awareness program on the OAU campus. BAOBAB For Women’s Human Rights, an organization that fights against sexual violence and discriminatory practices against women and girls.

This program, organized by a group of Obafemi Awolowo University undergraduate female students from the Sexual Violence Response Leadership and Advocacy Institute (SVRLA), including Chinwendu Augusta Nwachukwu, Oluwagbemileke Olujobi, Elizabeth Okoko, Joy Olaoluwa Ogundipe, Marvellous Olaniyi, Bilikis Ogunsakin, Adekemi Ladejobi, Havilah Nwanioma, Sekinat Akanmu, and Omorinsola Akinsunmi, took place at the OAU Sports Complex on November 21, 2023. Themed ‘Combating Sexual Violence,’ the program aimed to raise awareness among female undergraduate students on various aspects of sexual violence, including its forms, consent, precautionary measures, and steps to take in the event of an incident

Elizabeth Okoko moderated the session, with the first speaker, Joy Olaoluwa Ogundipe, delving into the topic of Sexual Violence. Following her, Chinwendu Augusta Nwachukwu spoke on Consent. The guest speaker Mr. Alfred Ogunyinka from the Clinic for Human Rights OAU provided valuable insights into combating sexual violence and highlighted the appropriate channels to reach out to in cases of emergency, sharing contact numbers: 0816 885 5961, 0903 202 8286.

Oluwagbemileke Olujobi focused on ‘Precautionary Measures and Bystanders’ Role, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures. The program concluded with a question and answer session, followed by closing remarks by Sekinat Akanmu, summarizing the event.
