First Student Researchers Conference by Young Researchers’ Hub, Obafemi Awolowo University

The first Student Researchers Conference organised by students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, was held on the 1st of June 2024 at ACE Park, Oau, Ile-Ife. In attendance were Prof. A. V. Adejumo from the Department of Economics and Dr. Funmilayo Wuraola from the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. In addition, Dr Malomo of the Faculty of Technology was present to give the keynote address on behalf of the DVC RID, Prof Akanni Akinyemi.

The keynote address emphasized the necessity for university students to become researchers who actively contribute to national growth and development. To support this goal, grants are available, recognizing the significant impact of research as a public good. The keynote address prompted numerous questions explored about impactful research, integrating various disciplines with the sustainable Development Goals, writing grant proposals, and collaborating across fields.

Participants attended breakout sessions on quantitative and qualitative research methodology, computer-aided drug design, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. There were also three research presentations titled ‘Heavy Metals in Drugs and Cosmetics’, ‘Conversion of Petrol Generators to Gas Generators’ and ‘Indigenous Plant Compounds for Asthma Treatment’.

The conference launched a book of abstracts containing 13 submissions from various states, showcasing the Young Researchers’ Hub’s commitment to research and development. In addition, awards were presented to supportive university staff, and the best student researcher who had published six articles in the current session.

The conference was a show of excellence by the organisers under the leadership of Mr. Taiwo Sokunbi, Director of the Hub.
