Introducing the Future of Wastewater Management: The Modular Sanitary Wastewater Research Hub

Meeting with the management for site allocation on 3rd August, 2022

The Modular Sanitary Wastewater Research Hub was commissioned by Professor A. S. Bamire, the Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo on the 26th of February 2024. The hub was generously donated by Oladepo Ogunkeye, a postgraduate research student. This innovative project marks a significant leap towards addressing the pressing issue of wastewater management.

The project was the result of the visionary leadership of the late Professor B.O. Solomon, alongside the unwavering dedication of Professor (Mrs.) E.F. Aransiola, who now leads the project following Professor Solomon’s death. The project is supported by a team of brilliant minds from the Departments of Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

The initiative aims to revolutionize wastewater treatment using locally available resources. It seeks to combat the hazardous pollution stemming from inadequate wastewater management practices, particularly in the campus hostels. By employing indigenous solutions and minimizing reliance on imported materials, we not only mitigate environmental harm but also contribute to conserving precious foreign exchange reserves.

Students embarking on their Industrial Work Experience Scheme can work on multiple projects within this hub. Projects can range from investigating sustainable alternatives to chemical inputs to exploring novel applications for wastewater byproducts. Moreover, the hub’s potential extends to agriculture, where treated wastewater can rejuvenate the research farm, enabling year-round cultivation and bolstering food security efforts.

The project boasts a stellar lineup of researchers and collaborators, including Dr. A. A. Akindahunsi, Dr. (Mrs.) A. L. Ayodele, and Dr. A. O. Aransiola, Ogunkeye Oladepo, Olatunde Emmanuel Oluwapelumi, Mowobi Eniola Ayotomiwa, Ajayi Boluwatife Ifedayo, Ege Abigail Constance, Kolawole Fawaz Ayodeji and Omotayo Oluwatobi Micheal. Their collective expertise, coupled with the enthusiasm of undergraduate students from Chemical and Electronic and Electrical Engineering, forms the backbone of this transformative initiative.
