The sun rose over the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, casting a golden hue on the historic campus as 7,732 newly admitted students embarked the first official chapter of their academic journey. The 2023/2024 matriculation ceremony, a grand affair held in three batches, saw a sea of eager faces brimming with hope and anticipation.
The University, renowned for its academic excellence and culture of discipline, once again opened its doors to a new generation of scholars. The solemnity of the occasion was underscored by the presence of the institution’s principal officers, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire.
In a thought-provoking address, Professor Bamire welcomed the freshmen with words of wisdom and challenge, setting the tone for their years ahead at OAU.
Taking center stage, Professor Bamire delivered an electrifying address, resonating with the ideals and values upon which OAU was founded. He emphasized that their admission was not a mere chance occurrence but a privilege earned through diligence and merit.
“You are now part of an institution with a legacy of producing trailblazers. OAU is a citadel of knowledge, character, and innovation, and we expect nothing but the best from you. This university does not just impart knowledge; it molds individuals into thinkers, creators, and nation-builders,” he stated.
His address took a serious turn as he spoke on discipline, urging the students to adhere strictly to the matriculation oath they had just taken.
“Understand this—OAU will not condone disruptive and defiant behavior. Our institution thrives on a culture of order, respect, and responsibility. As students, you must uphold the highest standards of conduct. Defiance to authority, engagement in cultism, examination malpractice, and other forms of misconduct will attract the full weight of disciplinary measures,” he warned sternly.
The Vice-Chancellor’s speech was not just about caution; it was also an inspiring call to excellence. He charged the fresh students to live daily by the spirit and letter of the matriculation oath, pledging to be worthy ambassadors of the university in both character and learning.
“You have sworn to be of good behavior, and we expect you to live by that promise every single day of your stay here. The University’s doors are open to you for guidance, mentorship, and all the support you need to excel,” he assured them.
Amidst the academic rigor, Professor Bamire reassured the students that their welfare and comfort remain paramount to the university administration.
“We understand that your success is deeply connected to the environment in which you learn. As an institution, we are committed to ensuring that your time here is not only intellectually rewarding but also comfortable and fulfilling. Efforts are continuously being made to enhance the infrastructure, provide modern learning facilities, and improve hostel accommodations,” he promised.
The matriculation ceremony was further enriched by the grand procession of academic leaders, which included the Vice-Chancellor’s three deputies: Professors Bola Babalola, Yomi Daramola, and Akanni Akinyemi; the Registrar, Mr. Tunji Bakare represented by Mr. Martin Okoroafor; the Librarian, Dr. Kemi Fadehan; the Bursar, Mrs. Toyin Abogan; the Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Dean, Faculty of Science, Professor Yinka Adesina; other Deans and Provosts; the Director of Academic Affairs; the Admissions Officer; Faculties and Colleges Secretaries; and representatives of the Students’ Union.
As the ceremony came to a close, the fresh students, dressed in their academic gowns, left the venue with a newfound sense of belonging and responsibility. For many, the words of the Vice-Chancellor would echo in their minds as they navigated their academic journey.
At Obafemi Awolowo University, the matriculation ceremony is more than just a formal event; it is a rite of passage, a moment of transformation, and a promise of a bright future. As these young minds embark on their quest for knowledge, the institution stands ready to shape them into the leaders, innovators, and change-makers of tomorrow.
