386th Inaugural Lecture: Professor Emmanuel Abiodun Ariyibi

TITLE: EXPLORING EARTH AND SPACE FOR THE BENEFITS FOR MANKIND

The Earth  and the space around it has always provided us with resources such as soil, water, metals, industrial minerals, and energy, and we need to know how to explore and exploit these resources sustainably for the benefit of mankind. Equally, we must understand the space around the Earth and how the dynamics of the external fields affect our activities (such as navigation, communication, climate etc.) on Earth.

Over the years, the scientific team at the Earth and Space Physics Research Laboratory (ESPRL) of the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile –Ife, have carried out many research in the areas of Ionospheric Physics, geomagnetism and Applied Geophysics. Some of the research results have been published in many reputable national and international journals.

As Head of the ESPRL research group, some of the benefits of these research results for mankind development including but not limited to areas of : groundwater, waste management, mineralization, Ionospheric and geomagnetic studies and its implication on navigation and communication systems would be presented.

The conclusions and recommendations which can make the benefits sustainable are well discussed.
