Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has once again reaffirmed its leadership in academic and research excellence, emerging as the 1st Place Recipient of the Best Institutional AI Policy in Higher Education Award (University Category) at the prestigious 2025 AI Awareness Day in Higher Education.
The award, presented during a virtual ceremony on February 17, 2025, was conferred upon University following a rigorous evaluation process that recognized the institution’s exceptional contributions to artificial intelligence (AI) policy development in higher education. The recognition was officially conveyed in a letter signed by Professor Nasiru Maiturare, Chairman of the Awards Selection Committee.
In a jubilant announcement by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation & Development), Professor Akanni Akinyemi, the University’s administration highlighted the pivotal role of the Central Office of Research (COR) team led by the Executive Director, Professor Ebun Adejuyige. Commending the team as the driving force behind this achievement, the DVC (RID) noted that the COR led the formulation and refinement of the institution’s AI policy.
The award underscores the University’s commitment to innovation, responsible AI governance, and academic leadership in the evolving digital landscape. “This victory is a testament to our collective resolve. For months, our team collaborated across disciplines to craft a policy that not only addresses current challenges but anticipates tomorrow’s AI landscape,” stated Professor Akinyemi.
Speaking on this milestone, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, applauded the team behind the achievement, describing it as a testament to the University’s drive for excellence and forward-thinking approach to emerging technologies.
“This recognition affirms OAU’s leadership in AI policy development and our dedication to shaping the future of AI in higher education. I extend my sincere appreciation to the Central Office of Research and everyone who contributed to this success,” Professor Bamire stated.
