OAU Breaks Into Global Top 1,200, Ranked Among Nigeria’s Elite in Consecutive International Ratings
Obafemi Awolowo University has again demonstrated its enduring pedigree as one of Nigeria’s premier citadels of learning, recording a definitive global ranking of 1,157th and placing 46th in Africa in the highly competitive 2026-2027 U.S. News and World Report Best Global Universities Ranking. The result, published on 16 June 2026, places OAU firmly among the country’s top-performing federal institutions and underscores its growing influence in global academic research and reputation.
The biennial ranking, one of the most comprehensive and closely watched in the world, assessed more than 2,250 universities across over 100 countries, employing thirteen rigorous performance indicators. These metrics span the full spectrum of scholarly excellence, including global and regional research reputation, bibliometric data drawn from the Web of Science, normalised citation impact, and international collaboration. Only seven Nigerian universities earned a place in the global table, all of them federal institutions a stark illustration of the sector’s uneven development but also a validation of the enduring strength of the nation’s first-generation universities.
OAU’s position as the 46th best university in Africa and within the global top 1,200 is the product of sustained, quiet progress in research output and academic visibility. For a university whose scholars continue to push the boundaries of knowledge in fields ranging from the humanities to the medical and engineering sciences, this recognition is both a trophy and a spur.
The U.S. News ranking is not the only global index where the University has made its mark this year. In the 2026 Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Ratings, Obafemi Awolowo University was placed in the 1,001 to 1,500 band globally. Significantly, OAU was the only long-established federal university in Nigeria to be ranked in this competitive band, a distinction that points to the institution’s deepening commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals across its teaching, research, and operational footprint.
Taken together, these consecutive results craft a coherent narrative: an institution rooted in the proud tradition of the Class of ’62, the spirit of the Great Ife, and the pioneering vision of its founders, yet one that is increasingly attuned to the global benchmarks that define the 21st-century university.
The Vice-Chancellor notes that these rankings, while imperfect measures, serve as an important mirror. They reflect the dedication of the University’s faculty, the intellectual curiosity of its students, and the quiet professionalism of its non-teaching staff. The work of repositioning a great university is a marathon, not a sprint. These results confirm that the University is running well, and in the right lanes, research output, internationalisation, and sustainable impact.
The Office of the Vice-Chancellor congratulates the entire OAU community on these achievements and reaffirms the University management’s commitment to creating an environment where scholarship continues to flourish and serve humanity.
