Plastic Waste: Creating Value through Effective Waste Management Systems

The meeting commenced with Babajide Odu giving an introduction to the seminar series, and this was followed by Dr. Joshua Funminiyi Obisanya’s presentation on the subject of plastic waste and its potential to create value through effective waste management systems. Despite facing some technical difficulties, the participants actively engaged in a discussion centered around the concept of environmental entrepreneurship and the generation of business ideas related to plastic waste.

During this discourse, the participants delved into the far-reaching impacts of plastic pollution on agriculture, water quality, and public health. They advocated for solutions like recycling plastic packaging and adopting the circular economy model, which promotes sustainable production and consumption practices. They stressed the significance of examining the practicality of recycling waste packaging materials as part of the entrepreneurial process. Additionally, the feasibility of developing products from plastic waste and fostering international collaborations in this endeavor were highlighted.

A strong emphasis was placed on the importance of plastic waste recycling and the need to collaborate with various entities and groups dedicated to addressing the plastic waste issue. The participants also raised the issue of waste management within their own campus, recognizing it as a challenge that requires coordinated, management-level solutions to avoid duplication in plastic waste management efforts. This holistic approach to plastic recovery garnered appreciation and support from the attendees. To conclude the meeting, Babajide Odu underscored the significance of establishing policies and clear direction for effective waste management, emphasizing the potential benefits not only for the university but also for the broader community and nation at large.
