Call for Nomination for Award of Honorary Degrees of Obafemi Awolowo University

With reference to Statute 18(1) of the University Laws that “The University may, without examination, confer an Honorary Degree of Master or Doctor in any Faculty on any person whom it may deem worthy of such a distinction, provided that the holder of such Degree shall not be entitled to practice any profession or to hold himself out as possessing any skill in any particular branch of learning merely by virtue of the fact that it has been conferred on him.”, notice is hereby given that the Honorary Degrees Committee will meet soon to start consideration of nominations for the award of Honorary Degrees of the University
at the next Convocation in December 2025.

Therefore, in accordance with the procedure prescribed by the Senate, that nominations should be invited from members of the University as defined in Statute 2 of the University Laws, which listed members of the University to include (i) the Officers of the University, (ii) the members of Council, (iii) the members of Senate, (iv) the members of the Academic Staff, (v) the Graduates, (vi) the Students, and (vii) such other persons as may by Statute be granted the status of Members, a call is hereby made for nominations of qualified candidates as appropriate. The nomination should be adequately documented and should satisfy the established criteria for the award of an Honorary Degree of the University.

The criteria for nomination are:
(a) Outstanding academic achievement and recognition in a field of learning such as teaching, research and academic administration;
(b) Unique contribution to Arts, Culture and Literature in national and international spheres;
(c) Outstanding achievement and contribution to public and national interest in Business, Civil Service, Judiciary, Commerce, Industry, and eminence in the professions;
(d) Candidates who have demonstrated positive interest in the progress and development of the University.
(e) Active political aspirants would NOT be considered so as not to create an impression that the University was already taking sides:

All members of the University who wish to make nominations are hereby invited to submit a recommendation with the curriculum vitae of their nominees in soft copy and twelve (12) hard copies to be forwarded under confidential cover directly to the Vice-Chancellor not later than Friday, 19th September. 2025. The soft copy, in MS Word, should be forwarded to councilaffairs@oauife.edu.ng
