Intellectual Property 101: 4 Things Every Great Ife Student Needs to Know

Owning Your Brilliance

You’ve stayed up all night at the “White House,” sat through hot, crowded lecture halls, and put your heart into your code or creative work. Here’s the truth: in the real world, your idea is only as valuable as your ability to protect it. Whether you’re building the next big fintech app or writing a groundbreaking thesis, your brainpower is a valuable asset.

Thanks to the IPTTO (Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office) at OAU, protecting your “intellectual hustle” isn’t just for professors anymore, it’s for YOU. Take, for example, Stephen Adeyemo, the CEO and founder of Exportplug. Stephen didn’t just attend classes; he used his strategic vision to build a platform that empowers non-oil exporters and farmers across West Africa. His dedication recently earned him a ₦1 million grant through the Nigerian Youth Academy, a feat that highlights how a well-structured business idea can attract major investment.

Like Stephen, many “Great Ife” students are sitting on goldmines. Whether it’s a final-year engineering student turning a class project into a patented solar-powered gadget or a tech enthusiast building a platform for international trade, the IPTTO is the partner that ensures your hard work is legally protected and ready for the global market. Inspired by the recent milestone orientation at ACE Oak-Park, we’re breaking down the four things every student needs to know to turn their “A” grade into a global legacy.

Copyright: Your Code, Your Art, Your Rules

Did you know that as soon as you finish that ‘wicked’ beat, write some clean code, or complete your manuscript, it’s already protected? That’s what copyright means.

In today’s world, this is essential for you. It covers:

  • The Devs: Your software source code and database architecture.
  • The Creatives: Your photography, graphic designs, and music.
  • The Scholars: Your project reports and unique research data.
  • The Archivists: Your books and art works.

The ‘Great Ife’ tip: Copyright is automatic, but registering it through the IPTTO gives you the ‘legal receipt’ you need to stop others from copying your work and claiming it as theirs. Imagine this: You create a unique app that gains attention. While you have automatic copyright, someone else registers a similar idea and claims ownership. The ensuing legal battle can drain your time and finances. Formal registration gives you the upper hand, ensuring your rights are indisputable from the start.

Patents: Turning Inventions into Assets

If you’ve built a physical device, like a new solar-powered gadget or a breakthrough chemical formulation, you’ve moved from a “cool idea” to something that could be patented.

To get a patent, your invention must be:

1. New: No one else in the world has done it.

2. Useful: It actually solves a Nigerian (or global) problem.

3. Non-Obvious: It’s not something just anyone could have come up with in a few minutes.

⚠️ STOP! Don’t share a video of your invention on TikTok or present it at a seminar before you talk to the IPTTO. Sharing it too soon can ruin your chances of patenting it. Protect it before you post!

Trademarks: Protecting the Brand Name

Are you running a campus “hustle”? Maybe a clothing line, a tech consultancy, or a logistics brand? Your name and logo are your Trademarks.

Think of it this way: A trademark makes sure that when people hear your brand name, they know it’s the real “Great Ife” quality, not a knockoff. It’s how you build a brand that lasts even after you graduate.

The IPTTO: Your Secret Weapon on Campus

The biggest myth on campus is that obtaining Intellectual Property Right is expensive or only for “Professors.”

The IPTTO (located at the IFEDS building, off Road 1) is your free consultancy. Led by Prof. Grace Ogunlusi, they are here to ensure OAU students move from “searching for jobs” to “owning the assets that create jobs.” They help with the paperwork, the legalities, and connecting you to industry partners who want to pay for your brilliance.

Myth-Busters

Myth Reality
I’m just a student, I can’t own a patent.False. Some of the world’s biggest patents were filed by students (Google started in a dorm!).
Patenting costs millions of Naira.False. The IPTTO provides free guidance and support for OAU researchers and students.
Once I publish my project, it’s safe.False. Publishing without protection first often makes your idea “public property” meaning anyone can use it for free.
