OAU’s ISE 3.0 Points Pathways to Global Excellence, Sustainable Advancement

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has again positioned itself as the flagship of progressive education in Nigeria with the successful hosting of the “Improving Student Experience: Pathway to Sustainable University Advancement” (ISE 3.0) programme. The two-day event, held from November 19 – 20, 2025, drew together visionary leaders, industry experts, and enthusiastic students to chart innovative routes toward personal and institutional growth. Organized by the University Advancement Office in collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs, ISE 3.0 depicts OAU’s staunch commitment to a holistic student experience that transcends traditional academia, blending local ingenuity with global aspirations.

Under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor G. Adesola Aderounmu, the event was a masterclass in sustainable advancement. Professor Bamire’s representation emphasized the University’s strategic pivot toward creating an ecosystem where students not only excel academically, but also emerge as globally competitive innovators. “OAU is not just an institution of learning; it is a launchpad for transformative ideas that drive national development,” Professor Aderounmu conveyed on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, highlighting how ISE 3.0 aligns with the University’s vision of sustainable progress through student empowerment.

The event kicked off with a virtual Research Dissemination Workshop via Zoom, attracting scholars and stakeholders for insightful discussions on cutting-edge research. This set the stage for the in-person highlights the following day, at the Africa Centre of Excellence Main Hall, where the focus shifted to practical skill-building. A standout feature was the Students’ Recruitment Challenge, sponsored by Edubridge Academy, which transformed the hall into a hub of collaborative problem-solving. Designed to hone critical thinking and networking skills, the challenge unfolded in two dynamic phases. Participants first tackled individual assessments delivered via email, showcasing their analytical prowess under timed conditions. They were then grouped into diverse teams, each mentored by Edubridge leaders, and tasked with dissecting real-world case studies sent to their inboxes.

Though the 25-minute window for presentations proved a thrilling constraint, preventing full pitches before the audience, the exercise yielded profound insights. Teams brainstormed solutions with fervor, later sharing feedback that revealed newfound confidence in teamwork and adaptability. “This challenge was not just about winning; it was about discovering how collective intelligence can turn obstacles into opportunities,” one participant reflected, restating the event’s ethos. By midday, the programme seamlessly transitioned into the Staff and Students Capacity Building Workshop, where speakers and panelists delivered polished, thought-provoking addresses that left attendees inspired.

The Acting Director of the University Advancement Office, Dr. Adeduntan Segun-Olasanmi, articulated the broader implications of ISE 3.0. “In an era where Universities must evolve or stagnate, OAU’s commitment to sustainable advancement through initiatives like ISE ensures our students are equipped not just for jobs, but for leadership in a rapidly changing world,” she remarked. Dr. Segun-Olasanmi lauded the programme’s role in bridging academia and industry, positioning OAU as a model for African Universities striving for global relevance.

Co-host Professor John Adeolu Odedire, Dean of the Division of Student Affairs, wrapped the proceedings with heartfelt appreciation. Extending gratitude to the University Advancement Office for their meticulous organization, he gave special nods to the Vice-Chancellor – represented impeccably by Professor Aderounmu – and other principal officers for their steadfast support. Introducing the speakers and panelists with glowing commendations, Professor Odedire expressed unbridled joy at ISE 3.0’s impact: “This year’s program is a testament to OAU’s dedication to nurturing innovation and growth, empowering our students to become trailblazers in their fields.”

The keynote address by Mr. Razaq Ahmed, Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer of Cowrywise and President, CFA Society Nigeria, was a tour de force on personal branding and institutional synergy. With eloquence and insight, Ahmed urged students to “build their brand from day one in University, engaging in innovative projects that uplift the institution; imagine crafting a functional traffic light system to solve campus congestion.” He emphasized the motivational power of University backing, encouraging students to “embrace travel, network relentlessly, and shatter self-imposed limits.” Ahmed further advocated for OAU to forge alliances with international bodies like the CFA Institute, ensuring its programmes gain worldwide recognition and propelling graduates onto the global stage.

Complementing this global outlook, Dr. Seun Fakorede, former Oyo State Honorable Commissioner for Youth and Sports, and Executive Adviser to the Oyo State Government, delivered a grounded yet aspirational message on starting small. “You do not need to conquer the world overnight; begin locally, and let your values and experiences cultivate a global presence,” he advised, drawing from his own journey. Fakorede stressed that the true currency of University life is the experiential toolkit students build, which “equips them to thrive in the competitive labor market with resilience and adaptability.”

The panel session, moderated with poise, featured luminaries whose insights were practical wisdom. Mrs. Toyin Lasaki, Head of Human Resources and Administration at Knight Frank, championed active involvement: “Dive into associations, committees, and leadership roles without fear. Form teams of like-minded visionaries, start clubs, and tackle challenges head-on. That is how you forge expertise and networks that endure.” Her words resonated as a call to action, inspiring students to step beyond comfort zones.

Mr. Isaac Ibikunle, Senior Associate at Olaniwun LP, added a structured dimension, advising goal-setting and discipline. “Define your objectives early, master time management, and immerse yourself in clubs and organizations. Run for positions in your department, hostel, faculty, or even the student union. These experiences are invaluable stepping stones to future success,” he articulated, painting a roadmap for purposeful University life.

The event drew a diverse crowd of students, staff, and partners including Edubridge Academy, Campusman, Cowrywise, and others. As OAU continues to project through such initiatives, ISE 3.0 stands as a shining example of how targeted events can propel sustainable University advancement, ensuring graduates are not just employable but indispensable in Nigeria’s evolving landscape.
