Obafemi Awolowo University Emerged Top-Performing Institution i#n Africa At The Sir Dawda Karibi Jawara International Human Rights Moot Court Competition in Banjul, Gambia
The Obafemi Awolowo University Ile – Ife, received accolades for its outstanding representation by two part five students from the Faculty of Law – Mr. Akinwumi Akinyemi and Miss Oluwadamilola Ekundayo. They won the Sir Dawda Karibi Jawara International Human Rights Moot Court Competition, a prestigious event organized by the National Human Rights Commission in Gambia. Dr. (Mrs.) Ayoola Abuloye, a Lecturer 1 at the Faculty, provided valuable coaching to the winning team.
The preliminary rounds, conducted virtually in November, witnessed intense competition involving institutions such as the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law, University of Liberia, Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone, and the International Open University, among others.
Following the keenly contested preliminaries, four universities advanced to the semi-finals in Banjul, Gambia: Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; Makarere University of Uganda; University of Lagos; and University of Gambia. The final context, held on December 10, 2023, featured Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Lagos with Obafemi Awolowo University emerging winner.

In this prestigious international competition, the university’s representatives showcased exceptional legal prowess and commitment, bringing honour to Obafemi Awolowo University and affirming its standing as a leader in legal education on the African continent. Ms Ekundayo Oluwadamilola was awarded the best counsel of the competition.
