Building a Learning Community: How Obafemi Awolowo University Extends Education Beyond the Classroom

Education Beyond the Campus Walls

In Obafemi Awolowo University, where the culture, innovation and learning are flourishing, education goes beyond the four classroom walls. The university is solid and dedicated to the growth of knowledge and innovation as well as community development since its founding. The citadel of learning is committed to ensuring the advancement of cutting-edge research and development-focused activities, as there is the belief that education is a powerful tool in the development of society.

Obafemi Awolowo University is true to its vision of democratizing knowledge, which it opens to the people, directing its energies to the broad variety of programs and outreaches to the advantage of everyone. These programs, which are in the form of trainings, public lectures, research trade fair, and advocacy campaigns, further make known OAU uncompromising theme of innovation, empowerment and inclusivity.

Seven Years of Impact: Outreach That Builds Lives

The Institute of Education at Obafemi Awolowo University has within the last seven years shown what it takes to make education a community service. During 2018-2025, the Institute staff and students have launched a range of effective programs that involve children, schools, and local teachers in the significant learning programs.

An Institute-led campaign was also held in 2018 to mark the International Day of the Child on Advocacy Campaign for the Uphold of Child Rights. School owners, teachers, students, and parents of Ile-Ife and the communities around were involved in the event. Deliberations dwelt on defending the right of children and the provision of conducive learning and development environments.

In 2019, the Institute held a Right-Based School and Right-Based Classroom Seminar. This event provided teachers and administrators with practical ways of fostering inclusion, creativity, and respect in the classroom. There was also well-crafted art created using recycled materials by pupils, a viable interpretation of sustainability and innovation. To several children, it was the first time to demonstrate what they could learn besides textbooks.

As of 2021, the Institute of Education had strengthened its collaboration with local schools by celebrating the Universal Children Day. The workers and students of the Institute were invited to St. Model Primary School, Ile-Ife, where they spent the day with the pupils, giving them donations of learning resources and hearing stories that promoted the values of discipline and self-belief. To children it was a memorable day of happiness and affiliation with their big brothers and sisters at the university.

The Joy of Learning: Play, Books, and Imagination

The philosophy of holistic education of OAU focuses on play, creativity, and literacy. This was evident in the 2024 and 2025 International Play Day, which was hosted at the OAU Staff School. The games showed the educational merits of play, namely, the contributions to the emotional intelligence of children, the ability to work in teams, and find solutions to problems in an entertaining way.

Educators in the Faculty of Education took pupils through systematic play activities to drive home the point that learning occurs any time, anywhere, and it doesn’t have to be in the classroom alone to be considered learning.

The practice was observed on a grand scale in 2025 World Book Day Celebration, which was hosted by the Institute of Education. The event, which was based on the theme of Books Build Brighter Futures, was intended to revive the passion of reading among the young learners.

Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, the Vice-Chancellor, officially opened the celebration, together with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Dean, Faculty of Education, Professor Theodora Olufunke Bello, and a number of prominent scholars. Children were inspired by Professors Hannah Olubunmi Ajayi, Cecilia Omobola Odejobi and Johnson Oludele Okewole who gave them talks about the power of reading and imagination.

Book quizzes, interactive sessions and special acknowledgement was given to two young writers, Olabisi Ogunlade and Oyeleke Joel, who got certificates of excellence through their literary merits awarded by the Vice-Chancellor. It was more than a celebration, a statement: OAU is convinced that every child should be able to have access to books, mentorship and freedom to dream.

Inclusivity and Accessibility to All

The concept of inclusivity will continue to be a part of the mission of Obafemi Awolowo University. The University has well-defined policies that made all educational actions, whether in the community or on campus, to be      .

The community programmes at OAU are a demonstration of this policy. As an example, every Institute of Education outreach event is intentionally composed of representatives of different schools and social-economic levels. Besides, the University is still enhancing the accessibility infrastructure across campus to assist students and campus visitors who have disabilities with ramps, accessible classrooms, and special support services. This promise is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Goal 4: Quality Education and Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities. Including no one is a practice that OAU has demonstrated in its principle and practice, and can be emulated by other academic institutions.

Lifelong Learning and Public Engagement

In addition to the official academic education, Obafemi Awolowo University cultivates a rich tradition of public engagement and lifelong learning. During the study period, the faculties and institutes conduct public lectures, seminars, exhibitions, and professional development workshops, open to the general population.

These conferences are avenues of sharing ideas in national development, ethics, leadership and innovation. The executive’s training programmes of the university on short courses and vocational training also offer opportunities to professionals outside the university which enhances the role of the university in building the capacity of the country.

This kind of openness will provide the knowledge created in the university ecosystem to the society it is supposed to serve

Partnerships and Social Impact

The community-based programs of OAU are based on collaborations – with schools, non-governmental organizations, alumni, and public agencies. These partnerships have enhanced the social coverage of the university making it able to influence more communities in Osun State and other areas.

As an example, the contacts that facilitated the outreach events of the Institute of Education united the teachers, local school boards, and volunteers throughout Ile-Ife. Likewise, collaborations on World Book Day and Play Day made sure that all educational materials and logistics were delivered to all the children that were engaged.

Sustaining the Vision: The Way Forward

In the future, the University aims to broaden its community engagement programmes and increase its influence. Plans are underway to:

·       Introduce literacy and creative programmes to additional rural schools.

·       Play-based learning workshops should have more frequency.

·       Intensify partnership with government and other partners in the private sector to facilitate educational inclusion and digital literacy.

The aim is straightforward, yet deep-seated, which is to transform OAU not only into a place of learning, but a living demonstration of education as a good to the citizens.

Conclusion – For Learning and Culture

All these outreaches, all these seminars, all these classroom engagements within and outside the campus are resonations of the eternal motto of OAU “For Learning and Culture”.

It is not just a tale of degrees or research, but a creation of a community with knowledge elevating lives, learning being available to everyone and education becoming the bloodbeat of community change.
